Yerself is Steam. Cunt by Sam Taylor Wood

Yerself is Steam was an exhibition conceived, organised, selected, hung, opened and closed over a period of five weeks in the summer of 1996. Organised and curated by Iain and Jane, the exhibition featured work by forty London-based artists and was housed in the street and upper levels of 85 Charlotte Street, London W1, a space previously occupied by Karsten Schubert Gallery.

Iain and Jane included Jason Rock - The Still Ills, the highly stylized framed poster of 'Morrissey' from a Smiths tribute band, I've Built My World Around You, a sculptural work made up of 100 home-recorded compilation 'Tapes for Jane', a powerful observation of sentimentality and obsession and Why Can't I Be You?, a love poem.

"The silly season is upon us and, as befits the summer months, the city has spawned a rash of group shows. Contrary to the usual insipid fare and bootsale ambience, this exhibition boasts forty of Britain's best emergent talents. Eschewing thematic coherence, the curators have opted for a Generation X vibe, complete with blaring '70s muzak... If the new British school of art exists then, judging by this show, it's more Grange Hill than Bloomsbury. A treat; don't miss it."

This show captured the true spirit of the summer months, featuring an eclectic mix of work from established names, students and recent graduates. Each artist was invited to contribute either something made quickly and specifically for the exhibition, reflecting the spontaneity and spirit of the show itself, or to provide something 'unusual' and never before seen in the UK. Tracey Emin and Carl Freedman's White Dove embodied this idea, as did Dinos and Jake Chapman's highly uncharacteristic painting Tout Abus Sera Puni and Mark Jessett's remarkable Self-Portrait.
